چکیده

Distillers co-products have been used in swine feeding for more than fifty years, but the emergence of the fuel ethanol industry during the last few decades has dramatically increased the total quantities of distillers co-products that are available to the livestock and poultry industries. New technologies have also allowed the industry to convert a greater proportion of the carbohydrates in the grain to ethanol, which in turn has resulted in distillers co-products that have a different composition than the products produced earlier. Different technologies used in the production process allow for upstream or downstream fractionation of the grain or the coproducts, which results in a number of different co-products. For the swine industry to use the co-products most efficiently, research must be conducted to measure the nutritional value of these co-products in terms of energy and nutrient digestibility. The next step is to determine the inclusion rates of distillers co-products in diets fed to different categories of pigs that will result in the greatest performance without reducing the quality of the final products. If there are other consequences of including distillers co-products in swine diets, these also need to be documented for each product.

Alternative Feed Ingredients for Pigs

Largely due to the demand for grains for the bio-fuel industry, the cost of feed energy will increase worldwide. Therefore, alternative energy supplying pig feed ingredients should be explored, including distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), field peas, wheat shorts and liquid co-products from the bio-fuel and food industry. The inclusion of DDGS in diets is limited by the fiber concent...

Use of Distillers Co - proDUCts in Diets feD to poUltry

Co-products from distillation of cereal grains for alcohol production have been available to poultry and livestock producers for many years. Although the co-products were considered better suited for ruminants because of their relatively high fiber content, Morrison (1954) suggested that chick diets could contain up to 7% or 8% distillers grains and that diets for laying hens could contain up t...

SWINE FOCUS #001 Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) in diets fed to swine

Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) is produced from the fuel ethanol industry and is available for inclusion in diets fed to swine. During recent years, several research projects have been completed to investigate the feeding value of DDGS. Crude nutrient concentrations, energy and nutrient digestibility values, and effects of including DDGS in diets fed to different categories of swi...

Amino acids and energy utilization in zero-tannin faba bean and co-fermented wheat and corn dried distillers grains with solubles fed to growing pigs.

Application of alternative feedstuffs in swine diets will be dependent on characterization of their nutritive value. In 2 experiments, we determined the AA and energy utilization of Manitoba-grown zero-tannin faba beans (ZTFB) and co-fermented wheat and corn dried distillers grains with solubles (wcDDGS). Corn dried distillers grains with solubles (cDDGS) was also included for comparison. In Ex...

Invited review: The use of distillers products in dairy cattle diets.

Distillers grains with solubles (DGS) is the major coproduct of ethanol production, usually made from corn, which is fed to dairy cattle. It is a good protein (crude protein, CP) source (>30% CP) high in ruminally undegradable protein (approximately 55% of CP) and is a good energy source (net energy for lactation of approximately 2.25 Mcal/kg of dry matter). The intermediate fat concentration (...
